Should You Fix It Yourself — Or Not
There’s a satisfaction in fixing your own vehicle — and sometimes, it can save you serious money. But not every repair is a good fit for DIY.
Here’s how I help folks decide what to do themselves and what to leave to the shop.
1. Is it a safety-critical system?
Brakes? Steering? Suspension? You can do them yourself — but if you’re not 100% sure, it’s not the place to learn.
2. Do you have the right tools — and the space?
Some jobs need more than a socket set. I’ve talked folks through alternator swaps in a driveway — and advised others not to attempt it with the wrong tools and no jack stands.
3. Can you afford the time and risk?
If you can’t have the car down for two days while you figure it out, or if it’s your only vehicle, you might want to think twice.
4. Know what parts you need — before you open the hood
I've seen people get halfway into a job, then realize they’re missing a gasket, bolt, or the right fluid. I can help you get your parts list straight before you turn a wrench.
DIY is great — but only when it makes sense. If you’re unsure, a quick call with me can help you decide whether it’s worth doing yourself, or better left to the pros.
